Antisana - 24 Oct to 7 Nov '10

Written by Leader Felipe Jacome, November 2010

We had very challenging weather conditions preceding this expedition. Our team of four members, including myself, meant that we really go tto know each other very well through the course of the expedition. We started our trip having great views of Quito. A few weeks before the trip there had been a lot of rainfall around the Ecuadorian Highlands, but during our acclimatisation hikes up Rucu Pichincha, Rumiñahui, Iliniza and to Cotopaxi’s glacier (wonderful day), we were very lucky with weather and never got wet!

Mountaineering is a mix of diverse experiences; the weather gave to us an opportunity to enjoy good hikes and scrambling, whilst we had a plenty of opportunity to interact with a lot of Ecuadorian people during our rest day in Papallacta hot springs (“land of potatoes” in Quichua language), but the weather would prove the main factor in decision making. We could not go to Antisana due to there having been so much snow, so we decided to attempt Cayambe volcano, where we reached 5,600m.

I’d like to say thanks to all the team members and wish them all of the best for their future climbing plans.
