Antisana 2006

Written by Leader Javier Herrera, December 2006

Just a little note to inform you that we had another successful expedition to Antisana with four out of seven members reaching the top. All members completed acclimatisation hikes on Pichincha (4,700m) on the 1st, Rumiñahui(4,600m) on the 2nd and Iliniza (5,125m) on November 5.

After glacier training and further acclimatisation on the slopes of Cotopaxi, four members of the team reached the summit of Ecuador's fourth highest peak, Antisana, 5,748m in cloudy conditions on the morning of November 10. We reached the top on our second attempt, during the first one we found that the snow was not very good and the speed of the team was too slow to have a safe descent. We decided that the group should turn back to the high camp and two of the guides, Felipe Jacome and I went up to find the best route and to break trail to be able to move faster on the next day. On the next morning everything went smoothly and at 5:45 AM we were on the summit!

Everyone agreed that it was a very enjoyable expedition combining high quality climbing with a chance to see some of the many faces of Ecuador, the smallest of the Andean countries. All team members expressed their thanks to the leaders and to the team of guides for providing an excellent service.

The team also visited the Clarita Luz Children’s home in the city of Ambato where we had the chance to get to know about the life’s of the street kids of Ecuador and play some games with some them at the orphanage.

It was nice to see some familiar faces among the members who had returned to Ecuador and some others who we have met on other Jagged Globe expeditions abroad.
