Classic Rock - 20 to 22 June '14
Written by Leader, June 2014
We've just had an amazing weekend with Jason and Nicola on the Classic Rock course. The weather was fantastic and we even ended up searching out the shade of the higher mountain crags on Sunday. The focus for the course was actually Jason and Nic being able to get out into the mountains climbing safely on their own. They attended a Jagged Globe Scrambling course last summer and are off to Monte Rosa (Zermatt 4,000ers course) with Jagged Globe in a month from now, but this weekend was all about them figuring out how to do it all themselves and not me taking them up routes.
We went for an intro to multi pitch climbing in the very sunny, beautifully scenic and surprisingly quite Moelwyns. Jason and Nic proved to be superb and quick learners with Jason being able to lead 2 pitches of his first multi pitch route by the end of the day.
Sunday saw us on the ultra classic Idwal slabs, which the intrepid duo had picked out of the guidebook as their destination of choice for the day. The quicker starts that the Jagged Globe set up allows had us at the bottom of over 600 feet of climbing a good hour before all other teams, bar one. Jason and Nic utilised their new skills from yesterday; they picked an appropriate route for them to lead by interpreting the guide book and proceeded to take themselves very slickly and competently all the way up, with myself just gigging alongside providing top tips and handy hints as needed.
All in all it was an amazing weekend with incredible weather, fantastic rock stunning scenery and two people who had never seriously rock climbed outside before leading themselves up one of Snowdonia's classic V Diffs by the end. Brilliant!
