Jaime updates us from Antisana:
"So we went to Antisana on Boxing Day. The weather was nice in the afternoonm, so we had dinner and went to bed feeling positive. I am not sure at what time during the night, but it started to snowe very heavily and I could hear avalanches. I went out of my tent at around 10:30pm at night, and though it was quite clear, I was surprised to see a large amount of snow. I crawled back into my sleeping bag and about 5 minutes later I could hear it starting to snow again.
As planned, we woke at midnight, but the whole of our camp was covered in snow and I was surprised to see that our kitchen tent had collapsed under the weight of it! It was still snowing and the visibility was very poor, so we decided to go back to bed and make a plan in the morning. At around 6am the group was awake and we started taking down the camp, as realised there was little point in hanging around. We started to drive at around 9am, and though it was a scary drive in all the snow, the jeep made it down with us safely.
Back in town and after re-supplying with fresh food, we decided to go straight to Cotopaxi. We arrived at the hut in good time and with good weather, and again, we had an early dinner and went to bed. We got up at around midnight and left the hut at 1am into the middle of a starry night. We made good time getting to the glacier and weather was still looking good, but after two or three hours the weather started to deteriorate and wind and clouds began to roll over the mountain. We kept going until 5:30 am, at which time the wind had become stronger and there were times when it nearly knocked us over. We reached a high point of 5,700m and decided to turn around. It was disappointing, but it was an easy decision to make in the conditions.
We drove down to Tambopaxi, where we decided to stay and attempt Ruminahui on 29 December. Though easy hiking, the weather was still poor, but we managed to climb Ruminahui Central (4,700m). Next, we are planning to head to Cayambe to see whether we have some better luck with the weather!"
