Alps latest
We had our first Mont Blanc summits yesterday on our Alpine Introduction - Mont Blanc Extension, with Andy and Tomaz going for it off the first Midi lift, then back to the Cosmiques Hut. The weather was forecast to deteriorate rapidly on Monday (today) and so it did, meaning this was the best chance of summiting, rather than heading up the Gouter Route.
Andy wrote this summary from the past Chamonix Climber week:
"We had a good day on Friday 22nd, as the snow finally froze overnight. We did the Dent de Geant, which was perfect, with a bit of fresh snow from the evening storm the day before making it feel pretty special. The mountains look fantastic at the moment, but by 1pm the snow is dreadful. Early starts and early finishes are the name of the game, or take skis! 4 lads passed us today on the way down, looking pretty smug.
I've spent the past 3 weeks in Chamonix with some pretty wet weather, but looking back amazingly we managed to climb something every single day. Some cragging, some new multi-pitch locations in the Aravis and some old favourites like Machaby passed the wetter days. Lift access allowed us to take advantage of the clearings, memorably on the Contamine Grissole on Mont Blanc du Tacul and the Dent du Geant. The mountains are looking great now, with the rock routes clearing fast of snow, however a lot of weak snow remains in the higher mountains and some care will be required over the coming weeks, but the crevasses are nicely filled and eventually everything will settle down."
