25 year reunion for Mera Peak team

As proof that lifelong friendships are made on expeditions, here is an email from Christian Pratt about a recent get together of team members who first met on a Mera Peak expedition 25 years ago!

On 6th October 2000 I joined a Mera Peak tour with Jagged Globe, and we set off from Heathrow on what was to be a memorable trip. The group had met on the ‘training’ weekend, but were otherwise new to each other (albeit I did know Helen and Andy Foster already). We had a fantastic three weeks up to, on to and back from Mera, enjoying each other’s company on the way. Most of us summited (I didn’t - the story of my life!); all of us came back in one piece.

We had a couple of follow-up weekends in the immediate years that followed, though the last had been in 2010. Until this weekend just past, when what is now our ‘core’ gang gathered once again in North Wales for a decent leg stretch, plenty of food & drink, and plenty of reminiscing. (There was a slide show too!).

And 25 years later it was as though we were on the trails only yesterday, finding our way around the tents in camp each afternoon and reviewing another day in the hills over dinner in the mess tent.

I’ve attached a small selection of team photos - we’ve loosely tried to match up a before and after.

For the After shot (on a sofa in Llandudno!) you have (left to right) Charles Heath-Saunders, myself, Helen Foster, Andy Foster, Keith Rodber, Kevin Wilkins, Janet Rodber, Annette Davies (Ken’s wife - Annette wasn’t on the trek) and Ken Davies. Ken organised the weekend for us all, and led us up Foel-Fras, adjacent to Carnedd Llewellyn. (Janet & Keith Rodber weren’t on the hill but joined us ‘in the valley’.)

(Michelle, Alan and Martin weren’t at the reunion - we’ve sadly lost touch with them, and the other team member Frank.)
