Aconcagua

Aconcagua

The second highest of the Seven Summits, Aconcagua is a tough mountaineering expedition. It is an extremely arduous ascent due to the scale of the mountain, altitude and the unpredictable weather. However, it is not a technical climb and can be attempted by very fit mountain walkers without roped mountaineering experience.

Introduction

‘Trekking Peaks’ describes mountains that can be attempted without prior roped climbing experience.

All of these climbs require the use of an ice axe and crampons. You can complete an introductory mountaineering course in Scotland or the Alps, if you have never used them before. For some of these expeditions, we also require previous altitude experience, which you may have gained on a trek.

The term ‘Trekking Peak’ is frequently misunderstood, as the Nepalese Mountaineering Association (NMA) has list of 'Trekking Peaks' that includes Island Peak, Lobuje East and Tharpu Chuli, despite them requiring ropes and mountaineering techniques to climb them. There are actually some really tough mountains on the NMA list!

In our list Mera Peak and Stok Kangri are excellent ‘first’ mountaineering expeditions. Aconcagua is considered the highest 'Trekking Peak' in the world, as you don't need to use ropes to climb it. It's a tough expedition despite its lack of technical difficulty and is probably the most underestimated mountain in our entire expedition programme! Lhakpa Ri in Tibet is the easiest 7,000m peak in the world, with the expedition being best described as a high-altitude trek, culminating in a one-day glaciated ascent. Finally, Lungser Kangri, in Ladakh is another superb challenge if you want to go really high, but don't like the idea ropes and steep climbing.
