Ecuador Volcanoes - 1 to 17 August '10
Written by Leader Felipe Jacome, September 2010
“on time” I could say the new Ecuador Volcanoes group started their trip as son airplane landed in Quito.
Unfortunately, on the second day of our trip one of our members had to withdraw due to a health issue, that fortunately was recognised in time. As I always say: "safety first - the mountains will alwats be there".
After a good day of sightseeing in Quito’s old town, we started the expedition with a nice acclimatisation period, hiking and scrambling on Pasochoa and Pichincha volcanoes, and of course enjoying a very comfortable campsite at the base of Iliniza Norte peak. We scrambled and applied some basic alpine ropework techniques on our first 5,000m objective.
The weather was set to test our patience, but despite this, the whole team worked all the time as one single unit. It was a shame that we could not attempt Cayambe due to strong winds and fresh snow conditions, but our time on the lower slopes of the mountain served their purpose with acclimatisation.
The group was now well acclimatised and nobody was ill, so we decided to go for it on our first possible summit day on Cotopaxi. Again, we didn't have great weather conditions, but on Saturday 14th eight members of the team reached Cotopaxi’s summit.
Whilst resting and enjoying a good cup of coffee in a very cozy lodge after Cotopaxi’s success, I’m finishing writing this report. I would like to say "thank you" to all the team members for such an enjoyable trip. They accomplished so much and I am sure many of you are thinking about the next adventure!
