Ecuador Volcanoes - 18 Jan to 16 Feb '09

Most of the time, mountaineering is about enjoying ourselves, not on every occasion, but it will always be about learning from ourselves and from the places we climb.

Cristiane, Steve, Iain and myself spent a great time discovering many parts of this small country. The first days we visited churches, walked on cobble stoned streets in the old town in Quito, then we started the hikes, from the lowest to the highest climbs.

On Pasochoa (4,200m), the conditions were perfect, just in time we escaped from the rains. Guagua Pichincha (4,768m) was harder and higher and we began to feel the cold from the wind and the clouds coming towards us. The next peak was Iliniza Norte, but we could not summit because of the snow and bad weather. I think people in the UK call it Scottish weather conditions!

For the second part of the trip, we had a short rest and got to know more about the culture and customs from the people from the middle of the world. We spent a couple of days visiting Cuicocha Lake, Peguche Waterfalls and the famous Otavalo Market.

After that we had a great climb and summited Cayambe; and a few days later we did the same on Cotopaxi.

We discovered the peaks in Ecuador, the clouds and rains, and spent a great time working as a team, supporting each other, enjoying the scenery and getting to know more about mountaineering.

Our small team really enjoyed the expedition!
