Ecuador Volcanoes 28 July to 16 August 2001

Written by Leader Dave Hanna, September 2001

Horrendous conditions on Cayambe meant that we were confined to the hut where some useful training took place, we continued the following morning on to the glacier. Only slightly better conditions were met on Cotopaxi. Most gave up the unequal struggle when coated in 1/2 and inch of ice and battered by 50mph winds. Phil Drowley and Neil Larsen battled on to the top.

Chimborazo brought different problems, apart from its greater height. The mountain was dull grey instead of gleaming white due to the ash fall from a nearby volcano. This meant hard ice all the way and only the most experienced, fit and determined went to the top in clear conditions. Sally Harrington and Keith Kinrade to Veintimilla Peak and Neil Larsen and Phil Drowley to the Whymper Peak.« | »
