Ecuador Volcanoes - 21 Dec 03 to 9 Jan 04

Written by Leader, January 2004

The group spent a couple of cultural days around Quito before moving on to climb Pasochoa. Everyone reached the summit of this mountain. We were successful also on Pichincha.

We left the refuge under Cayambe with the night sky lit up by lightning, however the dawn cleared to blue skies. Three team members reached a high point of 5500 metres, while the remainder turned back at 5300 metres. Tricky conditions above, with unstable snow bridges over big crevasses, prevented a summit bid.

Despite very strong winds, five members reached the summit of Cotopaxi. Snow conditions were very good, and the first summiteers even had brief views of the crater.

Chimborazo remained a more elusive goal, with one member reaching Veintimilla summit despite difficult, very icy conditions. Two other team members turned back lower down.

Despite a few health setbacks the team remained upbeat & enthusiastic, enjoying the variety & contrasts which characterise this expedition.
