5 Top Tips for Ice Climbers

Here are IFMGA Guide, Andy Owen's top tips for ice climbers…

1 : Train your wrist and grip strength. These give out way before the arms and are slower to recover.

2 : Get a 1ltr flask. When you're out in -15c all day you probably won`t drink a litre of cold water, but some warm tea is just the ticket.

3 : Bigger is better for karabiners, especially those you will use to belay/abseil/attach to anchors. They're much less fiddley with gloves on than lighter, smaller Karabiners.

4 : Have 2 fixed karabiners or a specialist ice screw storage gizmo on your harness. These are great for stowing screws and are somewhere to put your axes when you abseil.

5 : Warm up before you start to climb, with your hands above your head your fingers are only going to get colder as you climb.
