South Georgia Traverse - March 2014
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition; Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition to cross Antarctica. Famously, it ended with him, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean crossing South Georgia on foot, from King Haakon Bay to Stromness, in May 2016. The British explorer, Duncan Carse, who first repeated the 50Km journey in 1955 said "I do not know how they did it, except that they had toñthree men of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration with 50 feet of rope between themñand a carpenter's adze".
Jagged Globe first repeated the journey in 2001, when Steve Bell led a team across South Georgia. In 2011, expedition leader, Mungo Ross, summarised their crossing "It will take a few days to let the enormity of our achievement to sink in. We completed the iconic journey, but each of us in our own way suffered to do it; it was not a ëpiece of cakeí and that is what made it so special!".
