Alpine Techniques courses - Level 1, 2 and 3
At the core of our 2013 programme of summer Alpine mountaineering are 3 Levels of ëAlpine Techniquesí courses. These instructional weeks aim to provide a defined set of skills, with the focus being on teaching and developing competent, self-sufficient and rounded Alpinists.
The ëIntroductory Alpine Techniques ñ Level 1í course introduces newcomers to the Alpine environment, teaching them the fundamental skills of alpine mountaineering. The course is based in the quiet Arolla Valley in Switzerland and is suitable for summer hill walkers, or those who have completed an introductory winter skills course in Scotland or rock climbers who have climbed up to grade ëV Diffí. No previous climbing or mountaineering experience is necessary.
ëAlpine Techniques ñ Level 2í builds on existing climbing and mountaineering skills and is designed to turn you into a fully-fledged, independent mountaineer. Based in Chamonix, France, you need to have completed an introductory Alpine Course, or have climbed in the Alps previously for no less than one week on routes graded PD or above. You may also join this course, having not climbed in the Alps, if you are a competent rock climber who regularly leads British grade ëSevereí or above.
Finally, the top level of course, ëAlpine Techniques ñ Level 3í aims is to produce self-sufficient Alpinists, climbing Alpine grade AD and above. You should be comfortable seconding this grade and aspire to leading a rope team at this level on classic mixed alpine routes. The course is based in the Swiss Valais.
