Rock Climbing and Scrambling
Course Director
Dave Walsh BMG (IFMGA)
Dave Walsh is the Senior Director of Scottish Winter Courses and Rock Climbing and Scrambling Courses and one of our most accomplished expedition leaders, with a vast amount of mountaineering to his name. Among others, this includes the first British ascents of two 8,000m peaks, Nanga Parbat and Cho Oyu. For Jagged Globe, Dave has led team members to the top of Everest, Vinson and Carstensz Pyramid, whilst completing his Seven Summits. More recently, Dave has led expeditions to Ecuador, Antarctica, Rwenzori Mountains and The North Col of Everest, as well as to many other peaks, including those in Nepal and South America. Course venue and Accommodation
Snowdonia National Park, North Wales
Many people have their first introduction to the outdoors in the hills of Snowdonia, but not everyone makes it onto the rock. Welsh climbing is steeped in history, its continued popularity is mainly due to the sheer quality and variety of climbing within a relatively compact area. Depending on the weather, you might be climbing rough quartzite rock on the isle of Anglesey, or enjoying a big mountaineering day on one of the longer routes on volcanic mountain rock in the Ogwyn Valley.
The Waterloo Hotel, Betws-y-Coed
Our base in Snowdonia is the Waterloo Hotel in Betws-y-Coed. This is one of the best hotels in the area and it is perfectly positioned for the surrounding climbing areas. From 2008, we will also use this hotel for our Pre-Trip Weekends. Our prices include twin-sharing accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis and use of the hotel's leisure facilities, which Include a 14 metre Indoor pool and gym. There is a wide choice of restaurants and pubs in Betws to enjoy an evening meal. You are accommodated from the evening of the start date, with the course starting at 9am the following morning and finishing on the evening of the last date. Trains connect Llandudno Junction to Betws-y-Coed. Journey times from London are approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes. See www.thetrainline.com.
Extending your course
If you are planning to join one of our courses, you may wish to take advantage of what you have already learnt with a day or two of private guiding at the end of your course. Obviously, there is plenty of opportunity to discuss with your instructor how to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from your private guiding days. This ensures that the additional days get off to a good start, as your instructor already knows at what level to pitch the climbing and instruction. Consequently, guiding days following a course offer an excellent chance to consolidate and extend what has been learnt already under the personal supervision of a qualified instructor. What is achieved during private guiding and the pace at which it is undertaken is very much between yourself and your instructor. The instructor aims to give you the most satisfying climbing and private tuition possible.
